Course Description:

ENGL 1001: Foundations in Rhetoric helps students develop their abilities to communicate effectively in writing, speaking, and across multimedia for diverse audiences. Grounded in rhetorical principles, the course focuses on helping students read and analyze texts critically and put their ideas into conversation with others.

Course Description:

ENGL 2011: Books that Matter: African American Youth Culture and Literature. Students study poetry, novels, and music by 20th- and 21st-century African American writers. In addition, the class explores how African American youth culture and activism influence literature and music. Finally, this course discusses how Hip Hop artists like Tupac Shakur and his musical contemporaries influence the current generation of Black activists and artists in the Black Lives Matter Movement.

Course Description:

ENGL 1001: Rhetoric and Composition 1, Academic Literatures. When we study critical literacies in ENGL 1001, we examine how people communicate in writing across different academic disciplines or fields (e.g., business, chemical engineering, criminology, finance, theater). Along the way, we look for both minor differences (i.e., word choices, sentence styles) and major differences (i.e., genres, purposes, uses of images and evidence), and we analyze those details in order to understand how they work individually and together to shape what we think someone is communicating.

Spring 2018

Course Description:

ENGL 1002: Rhetoric and Composition, Public Literacies, introduces students to research-in-action by focusing on critical literacies specific to public writing. In this project-based course, students will read, watch, listen to, and analyze public discourse as preparation for identifying a current social problem, researching its evolution, and advocating for a solution in both formal writing and a multimodal format suitable for public display at a campus-wide Undergraduate Research Celebration.
